Weather Synopsis for Monday & Tuesday
The main snow event for the mountains has ended with another 1-2 feet of snow falling over the last 24 hours for Hurricane Ridge, nearly all west slopes of the Cascades sites including the Passes and at Mt. Hood stations. Mountain temperatures had cooled significantly, with upper elevation stations in the single digits and widespread teens elsewhere.
A broad upper level trough envelops western Canada with NW flow aloft over the PNW allowing weak disturbances to impact the area over the short term. Strong surface high pressure over the interior of British Columbia and lower pressure along the WA/OR coast will allow modified arctic air to continue seeping out west of the Cascade Crest through the Fraser River Valley. Scattered showers will transition to light continuous snow this afternoon for roughly Stevens Pass and southward as a weak low pressure system races across central Oregon. More moderate snowfall totals are likely for Mt. Hood closer to the low. Very strong westerly winds for the south Washington Cascades and Mt. Hood will ease a bit this afternoon as the low passes to the south.
The semi-permanent surface low, common in this pattern, will return off the central/southern WA coast this evening. This feature should continue to rotate showers up into the west slopes of the Cascades through Tuesday, with the best chances for additional light accumulations from Snoqualmie Pass and south to Mt. Hood.
