Weather Synopsis for Monday night through Wednesday

Dry conditions with periods of high clouds will continue overnight with a strong upper level ridge anchored offshore. The ridge will begin to buckle as a fast moving but weak frontal system in NW flow aloft approaches the area overnight. Light precipitation should spread over the Olympics and north Cascades by late Tuesday morning. Light precipitation is expected for the central and south Washington Cascades later in the day while dry conditions prevail for Mt. Hood and the east slopes of the Cascades. The front will bring an increase in winds, especially in the alpine across the region. Low level clouds will fill in from north to south across the west slopes of the Cascades during the day.

Showers will become scattered and decrease Tuesday night. Low-level clouds and moisture will keep conditions mostly cloudy and perhaps drippy along the west slopes of the Cascades on Wednesday. More sunshine can be found further east of the Cascade crest and down near Mt. Hood on Wednesday.

Extended Weather Synopsis for Wednesday night through Friday

If you found the sunshine and dry weather disorienting, then you'll be relieved to know the jet stream will be dropping south over the Pacific Northwest beginning Thursday to deliver the first in a series of Pacific frontal systems in a progressive pattern. After the initial precipitation associated with the frontal passage on Thursday, a trailing upper-level trough should invigorate showers along the west slopes of the Cascades and Mt. Hood Thursday night with a high likelihood for additional significant snowfall accumulations. Weak upper-level ridging will shift over the area on Friday as scattered showers wind down. A stronger and more potent storm is poised to affect all areas over the weekend.
